New Use for Old Mill State Park 01 Sep 11

A new park plan for Historic Old Mill State Park, on Marshall County Road #4 between Argyle and Newfolden.

In addition to the iconic log cabin and steam-powered flour mill, beach, swinging bridge, picnic and campgrounds, the park may also soon host a staging area for Horseback Riding.

Chris Weir-Koetter – Strategic Program Manager for the DNR, says there has been great interest in including horseback riding in the current management plan.

Old Mill already hosts a wonderful wildlife area, with deer, beaver and ruffed grouse along with prairie wildflowers and wooded trails. Weir-Koetter says trails already established outside the park would connect with the staging area and 1.6 miles of trail inside the park for a network of some 40 miles of recreational horseback riding.

This project has a been an ongoing effort of members of the North Country Horsemen Saddle Club for over 3 years. We are pleased that the DNR has decided to fast track the proposal we first suggested. We are proud that our members could help bring additional riding opportunities for riders from areas near and far, as well as help introduce new visitors to this often overlooked gem of a park.

I just loved the Old Mill Park growing up. We had many family times just getting together or a picinc. I even had 1 year of swimming leasons there…my rest were at Warren pool that I loved also. Nothing can take back the memmories of the Old Mill. I remember meeting the first boy that I thought was love (When I return I will think of him RIP)

I just hope riders respect the hikers that use the same paths.
I love Old Mill, and would hate to have to cross it off my list of “family safe parks” because of the horses.

It is a matter of respect for all others and the land no matter what the activity may be
    Horseback riding, hiking, running ect…
I ride horse in many parks and as long as everybody respects one another I have never seen an issue.
