One of the great rivalries in area football rekindled on Saturday Night (10/8/11) when the Kittson County Central Bearcats hosted the Stephen/Argyle Storm in Hallock. Coming into the game the Bearcats and Storm both posted 3 win and 2 loss records, and were ranked #1 & #2 respectively, in the QRF rankings in the Section 8 9-man Football standings.
The KCC Bearcats won the opening toss, and deferred to the Storm. Stephen/Argyle would proceed to take the opening kick-off and mount an impressive 75 yard scoring drive that ate up nearly 7 1/2 minutes of the first quarters. KCC answered immediately on their first play from scrimmage when JR. running back Kyle Petersburg would break one open for 71 yards and a score. SAC would find the end zone 4-minutes later on a 55 yard run by Blake Labine. The SAC defense held KCC to just 2 offensive plays in the entire first quarter.
Both teams jockeyed for position in the second quarter, again SAC controlling the ball and the clock, with Daniel Haugen of the Storm scoring the only points of the quarter with a 3 yard run. The Storm led by 13 at half time.
The second half belonged to the Bearcats. KCC took the second have kick-off and put together an impressive drive that was capped of by a 24 yard run by Petersburg. SAC started moving the ball, but a leg injury to Daniel Haugen forced him from the field on a stretcher and ended the night for the JR. running back at 24 carries for 160 yards and two scores. The loss of Haugen took an important weapon out of the Storm offensive arsenal, and they struggled the rest of the night. A condition report on Haugen was not available prior to the end of the game.
Kittson Central would tally twice in the fourth quarter. The first score was a 7 yard pass from Zach Rynning to Derek Coffield, and the ensuring PAT that game the Bearcats a 21 to 20 lead. Coffield would find the end zone one more time with a 49 yard touchdown run with 2:30 remaining to seal the deal for KCC, and they would win 28 to 20.
SAC would put up 390 yards of total offense on 71 plays, while the Bearcats tallied 342 yards on just 42 plays.
The KCC Bearcats improve to 4-and-2 on the season, and will host the winless Sacred Heart Eagles on Thursday afternoon (10/13) in Lancaster. Meanwhile, the Stephen/Argyle Storm see their record drop to 3-and-3. The Storm will host the Goodridge/Grylga Chargers on Thursday evening in Argyle.
