After 6 first half lead changes, and 6 first half ties, the TRF Prowlers would go on an 8-0 run late in the first half to open up a 7 point (33-26) half time lead. The Prowlers struggled a bit against the play of Tori Davidson and Madison Thompson. The duo combined for 23 of their teams 26 first half points. The Northern Freeze would cut the lead to 5 points early in the second half, but strong post play by Crystal Amundson and perimeter shooting by guard Brooke Yaggie would rally the Prowlers to a 14 point win. Yaggie would lead all scorers with five 3-pointers, and hit for 18 of her 31 points in the second half.
The future of the series between the Prowlers (8AAA) and the Northern Freeze (8A), and other area Class A teams, may be in jeopardy. While it has been beneficial for both teams, in terms of good competition, little travel time, and local rivalry) the games no longer have much weight for the Prowlers. The Quality Results Formula that is used to rank teams, gives little weight to the win over the smaller school. For example the Prowlers entered Tuesday’s game with a QRF of 107.5 and gained just 1 point, 108.5, with the win. The Prowlers have seven games remaining on their regular season schedule. The final two, in late February, are also against 8A teams in Badger/Greenbush/Middle River and Warren/Alvarado/Oslo.
The Thief River Falls Prowlers improve to 16-and-2 on the season, and will be back in action on Friday, January 27th in Crookston. The Northern Freeze record drops to 9-and-8 on the season. The Freeze will return to play on Monday, January 30th at Warroad.
