Well, the issue came up earlier this week on Open Line and now we have confirmed that a group of Republican Law Makers will try to bypass the Governor to place a proposed constitutional amendment on the ballot this November – requiring Minnesotans to present a photo ID before they can vote.
Republicans tried to pass a Voter ID Bill through the legislature last year, but the measure was vetoed by Governor Mark Dayton, who said it would be especially difficult and expensive for elderly Minnesotans to secure a photo ID when they no longer hold a State Drivers License.
Pennington County Auditor and Chief Election Officer, Ken Olson also voiced objections to the 2011 measure saying there is little evidence of voter fraud and citing the cost to counties to issue photo documentation.
The constitutional amendment is expected to be sponsored by Hutchinson Republican Scott Newman who said this week the measure boils down to voter integrity. Newman says he sees no problem requiring people to show that they are who they say they are.
