The East Grand Forks Sacred Heart Eagles (seeded #10) pulled the mild upset on Tuesday night, beating the KCC Bearcats (#7) 74-69 on their home court in Hallock on Tuesday night in the opening round of the Section 8A Girl’s Basketball Tournament.
It was the second meeting the season between the two teams, the first coming in the season finale on February 23rd when the Bearcats beat the Eagles 54 o 46.
KCC started the game with a good balanced offense, and quickly jumped out to an 8 point lead before a series of turn-overs and missed shots and rebounds opened the door the Sacred Heart Eagles to erase the deficit. Stacy Remer, Amanda Goddin and Jordyn Lloyd combined efforts for Sacred Heart to dominate the boards and lead their team into half-time with a 37 to 34 lead.
Both teams were slow to start the second half of play, and despite shooting poorly, the KCC Bearcats were able to claw thier way back into the contest to retake the lead at 51 to 50, a couple of lead changes later and the Sacred Heart Eagles, behind the strong offensive play of sophomore Stacy Remer would hold on to the lead and a five point win over KCC. Remer dominated, scoring a game high 32 points in the win.
Kittson County Central got in foul trouble mid-way through the second half, putting the Eagles to the foul line 35 times. The foul problems for KCC limited the intensity in which the Bearcats could attack on the defensive end. 4-KCC players would play a good chuck on the second half with four personal fouls, two would leave the game in the final minute.
Both teams got balanced scoring from the entire line-up, and while KCC held a slight edge in rebounding, they also shot the ball very poorly. Each team scored thier highest point out put in a game this season. 74 for EGH SH and 69 for KCC.
The win improves the EGF Sacred Heart record to 4 wins and 19 losses on the season. The win moves the Eagles in the Sub-Section quarterfinals on Thursday, March 1st at 6pm at Northland Community & Technical College in Thief River Falls. The Eagles will play Stephen/Argyle (22-3). In their previous two games this season the #2 seeded Storm have defeated the Eagles by a 31 point margin. Scores of 63-32 on December 5th and 64-33 on January 23rd.
The loss ends the Kittson County Central season at 7 wins and 18 losses. The Bearcats will say goodbye to six senior players on their roster, including: Shelby Diamond, Ashley Carlson, Paige Craigmile, Megas Olsonawski, Sierra Karboviak and Bailey Peterson.
