Black Bear Visits TRF 14 Jun 12

Could be he was just in town for the “Battle of the Dogs …”

A young Black Bear, spotted by city utility crews this morning at Greenwood and Crocker in Thief River Falls.

Dispatcher Dave Carlson, at the Pennington County Law Enforcement Center, says they got the call just after 9:35 this morning with Sgt. Chuck Lindgren and Officer Vern Wittenberg responding.

Officer Wittenberg says the last bear sighting in Thief River Falls was nearly 7 years ago.

The two officers used their squad cars to get the black bear headed in the right direction, escorting the animal out of the city limits, back to its wilderness home.

I wonder if that’s the same bear that came barreling out of the woods about 50 ft. in front of me about 2 years ago? And no, I’m not exaggerating, I could hear him breathing heavy I was that close. I was walking towards Greenwood on S. Kendall when he must have gotten spooked. The bear just glanced at me and continued running between houses on S. Tindolph. I called the police, but apparently it wasn’t reported. Needless to say, that’s the last time I walked over that way…
