While their counterparts competed in Anaheim, California – the Robotics Team from Greenbush / Middle River advanced to the FIRST Competition in St. Louis, Missouri over the weekend – ending the day – and earning a trophy – as the Highest Ranking Rookie Team this Season. Principal Eldon Sparby traveled with the team, advancing after placing second at the Northern Lights Regional Competition in Duluth in March.
The Greenbush / Middle River Team includes 26, 9th to 12th Grade Students, along with advisors Mary Anderson and Kathleen Kallis with support from Hlucny Repair, Wahl Brothers Racing, DRB Fabrication, Jon’s Auto, Northern Ace Store, DW Mechanical and the Badger School District First Robotics Team.
Principal Sparby says the group was also able to take in a little of the ambiance of St. Louis with a visit to the St. Louis Arch and Cardinal’s Baseball Game.
First Robotics gives teams 6 weeks to construct a robot from a standard kit of parts to solve a common problem. As competition draws closer to the Championship Round, teams form alliances with other teams to push eachother into standings. Out of 1 hundred teams in their division, Greenbush / Middle River ranked 14 at the end of competition, their only disappointment that they were not drawn into an alliance in the Championship Round.
Straight ahead for all teams in the listening area, the Minnesota State High School League Robotics Competition, sponsored by DigiKey, on the campus of the University of Minnesota, May 17th.
