Icy road conditions are being blamed for a tragic traffic accident that took the life of a Thief River Falls woman yesterday.
According to the Minnesota State Patrol, 62 year old Mary Louise Reierson died when the Chrysler Town and Country mini-van she was driving collided with a trailer hauling a skid steer loader late Tuesday afternoon on an ice covered stretch of Highway #32, 2 miles north of St. Hilaire.
State Troopers say the van was northbound on the Highway, the trailer unit being towed by a southbound Chevy Silverado pickup driven by 18 year old Julie Good of Thief River Falls.
Officers say Good lost control on slick blow ice, the pickup sliding into the northbound lane. Neither Good, or a passenger in the pickup; 56 year old Rose Koepke of Thief River Falls, were injured
Law Enforcement were assisted at the scene by the Thief River Falls Fire Department, Fire Fighters using the Jaws of Life to free Reierson from the wreckage – she was taken by ambulance to Sanford Regional Medical Center in Thief River Falls where she died.
Officers say the passenger and both drivers were wearing seat belts at the time of the accident, reported at 4:50 Tuesday afternoon.
