Norden Township Tragedy Prompts Sheriff’s Warning 05 Jul 17

Pennington County Officials have released the name in an apparent drowning last night in Norden Township.

Myron Sunram, 40,  of Thief River Falls, lost his life while swimming in a gravel pit area in Section #30 of Norden Township. The tragedy was reported Wednesday night at 6:36pm. An autopsy has been reported.

According to the Pennington County Sheriff’s Department, Sunram was swimming in the pit area with a party of four; two children and another adult, who was on the opposite side of the pit area when she noticed “something wrong” as Sunram was swimming in the middle of water pool with one of the children on his back. Officers say she ran to the north side and pulled Sunram from the water, calling 911 as she began CPR.

Sunram was taken by ambulance to Sanford Medical Center in Thief River Falls but was pronounced dead in the Emergency Room, with the case still under investigation.

The fatality prompted an advisory from Sheriff Ray Kuznia late last night, warning the public to stay away from gravel pit areas in this week’s heat wave, opting instead for monitored beach areas.

In this case, the gravel pit where Sunram was swimming is owned by Pennington County and is posted No Trespassing.

Deputies were assisted at the scene by Thief River Falls Fire and Police, FM Ambulance and the Minnesota State Patrol.
