Authorities Respond to Child Drowning Report 03 Aug 17

Police Chief Dick Wittenberg calls it the best possible outcome.

Arriving at the scene and finding everyone is going to be “just fine.”

That was the case yesterday when Thief River Falls law enforcement and fire fighters responded to the report of a child drowning under the 8th Street Fishing Pier at Chief Red Robe Park. The call came in at around 12:30 Wednesday afternoon, with an emergency response that covered both sides of the river bank.

Chief Wittenberg says officers found the child safely out of the water, pulled out by friends, after “falling in” while playing on the pier with other children.

It is the second emergency response to that same area of the river this season, prompting more discussion over ways to monitor activity in that area of the Red Lake River, which also includes, Tindolph Beach, the 8th Street Boat Landing opposite the beach, the fishing pier at Chief Red Robe Park and the new Kayak Launch, also at Bill LaFave Park.

In the mean time, Chief Wittenberg encourages residents to continue to call 911 when they believe an emergency situation is developing, saying he’d rather arrive to a rescue than a tragedy.
