Fire Whips Through Area Township Wednesday 19 Oct 17

No injuries reported and no damage in a rural grass fire whipped into a blaze during yesterday’s Red Flag Warning.

Fire officials in Thief River Falls say high winds, low humidity, and unseasonably warm temperatures combined to reignite a pile of leaves and yard waste still smouldering after being raked into a pile, and burned some two weeks ago.

The call for assistance came in just after 2:30 Wednesday afternoon, to a home on 154th Street Northeast in Smiley Township. Fire crews quickly worked to contain the blaze on 1.5 to 2 acres, burning into a wooded area and field.

The fire did threaten a neighboring home for a short time, although no damage was reported.

Fire officials say there was no one to blame in yesterday’s fire, but also say we are currently in a no burn zone, with no burning permits being issued and no outdoor burning allowed.
