Names Released in Fatal Accident Near Plummer 15 Nov 17

The Minnesota State Patrol has released the names of two women killed in a car/train accident this morning near Plummer.

The driver of the car; 78 year old Emilie Skjerven and a passenger, 79 year old Carol Gerardy, both of Plummer – died at the scene after Skjerven’s 2015 Ford Taurus collided with the south bound train shortly after 10:30 this morning.

According to Red Lake County Sheriff, Mitch Bernstein, the accident was reported as a 911 call to dispatch in Red Lake Falls after the two drove away from a residence west of Highway #59, a mile North of Plummer in Emardville Township.

Sheriff Bernstein says the vehicle was traveling east/west on a private driveway that intersects the rails; the CP Rail Freight Train; an engine and eight cars, south bound at about 40 miles per hour when the collision occurred.

The State Patrol says Skjerven failed to yield at the rail crossing stop sign and drove into the path of the train. Both women were wearing seat belts with conditions reported as dry at the time of the accident.
